Bringing back local school milk

Shiphay Community Primary School has teamed up with the Organic Dairy at Riverford Farm in Staverton nr Totnes to offer fresh cool school milk daily to all its pupils.

Farm Fresh Organic Milk for schools - First in TorBay !

Shiphay Community School recently started offering prepared fresh fruit daily to its youngest pupils as part of their Healthy Eating initiative “Café Time”.
With National School milk week starting this week a call from Riverford Dairy has enabled the school to offer cool milk to all children cutting down the desire of the children to consume fizzy drinks, or sugar rich squashes whilst allowing them to drink more. Research has shown that regular and frequent drinking actually helps the children to learn and retain information.

Elaine Gill, Headteacher at Shiphay School, commented “We had been looking to find a way to offer healthy drinks to the children and understood that often the drinks brought in from home were less attractive to drink once they warmed up as the day went on. We remember having warm milk served in bottles as children and couldn’t see that being attractive!”
Riverford Farm (known nationally for its organic produce) has been able to offer us restaurant style milk cooler that we have nicknamed “Mabel”.
“Mabel” offers us chilled milk for the children at a push of the button making it quick and easy to use. With their regular deliveries Fresh Organic Milk can be offered at a price most parents can afford and it is easily cheaper than buying it from the shops.”
“We already have a Healthy Schools’ Award and this fits in well with our other “healthy” initiatives such as “Fit for Learning” where children have 15 minutes physical exercise at the beginning of every day.

Riverford Farm Dairy (established four years ago) is a local producer - proud of the fact that they use only the milk from their own organic cows and that it is pasteurised, and packed right there on the farm before delivering it to customers within Torbay and South Hams the SAME DAY – Its that fresh ! –
